Announcing the passing of Hansadutta das

With great sorrow we report that Hansadutta das has left his mortal shell, as of today, 25 April. In recent months he had been suffering from acute pancreatitis, but in late March it was discovered that he had advanced cancer of the pancreas. Hansadutta, who would have been 80 in May, spent his final days chanting and sometimes singing the holy names alternating with listening to Srila Prabhupada's lectures.

Why did Prabhupada publish all these books?

HANSADUTTA: The important thing is… The Harinam initiation is important. It’s the first initiation, it’s the most important. But in Kali Yuga it’s also good if you are – how do you say? – engaged in deity worship, so generally, after a person has been purified to a certain extent, they’re offered the sacred thread ceremony, so that they can also worship the deities. But… but the essential thing is the Harinam. That’s essential.

On that occasion, Radha-vallabha dasa was describing how the upcoming printing of the Bhagavad-gita was going to require so much paper that it would take seventy-six train cars to transport it (1.5 million copies). Srila Prabhupada absolutely did not suggest making any corrections before this largest printing ever of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is. In fact, and to the contrary, in a discussion that took place three days later, he established a definitive “no change” policy that he wanted applied henceforward to all of his books.

It is the function of the disciples to confirm the instructions of the spiritual master, and give assistance to the new candidates. It is not their function to use Srila Prabhupada’s books for alluring new candidates to increase their personal following, as it seems to be the case today.
